| | What are VOCs? | | | Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are man-made chemicals compounds that have a high vapor pressure and low water solubility. VOCs are used and produced in the manufacture of fuels, paints, pharmaceuticals, and refrigerants. VOCs typically are industrial solvents, paint thinners, tetrachoroethene (dry cleaning fluid) fuel oxygenates (MTBE), or by-products produced by chlorination in water treatment. VOC contaminants travel with or on top of ground-water. They can easily become gases and migrate through soil. Negative pressures that are induced by buildings draw VOCs off the top of the ground water though the soil and into occupied space where human exposure occurs. | | Most vapor intrusion events involve contaminants leaked from underground storage tanks at gas stations or PCE from dry cleaners. In many cases, contaminant releases are not immediately discovered. By the time they are discovered, the contamination has had time to migrate through the soil, and into you home or building. |
